How we can help
The British High Commission represents the British Government in its relations with the Mauritian Government and promotes British interests in Mauritius. Since the closure of the British Embassy in Antananarivo in August 2005, the High Commission in Mauritius is also responsible for relations with Madagascar and the Comoros.
One of the High Commission’s key functions is to provide consular assistance to British nationals, visiting or resident in these countries, who encounter problems or who need to renew their passports. The Consular and Visa section also processes entry clearance applications for Mauritians, Malagasies and Comorians wishing to visit, do business, study, or settle in the UK. Emergency consular assistance is available through a duty officer in Mauritius and through Honorary Consuls in Rodrigues and Madagascar.
The political section works closely with Mauritius on areas of mutual interest such as good governance, human rights, and international crime prevention. It also handles issues relating to the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).
The High Commission funds a number of small projects, working in conjunction with partners in the non-governmental sector, aimed at alleviating poverty and promoting environmental awareness and protection.
The Press and Public Affairs Section is responsible for ensuring UK policies are properly understood by the Mauritian media and public. It issues press releases on newsworthy events, responds to requests for information from members of the public and answers queries from the Mauritian press.
The High Commissioner’s Defence Adviser, based in Pretoria, is responsible for giving guidance and help on such matters as military training and capacity building for international Peace Support Operations.
The Management Section is responsible for all personnel, financial and administrative services & resources and provides support to all other sections.
