Bilateral Relations
Bilateral relations between Mauritius and the United Kingdom are friendly and substantive. The relationship is underpinned by long-established academic and professional links and a small number of scholarship grants. The British Council plays an active role in Mauritius. It operates one of the largest English language libraries in the region and promotes English Language Teaching.
More than 81,000 British tourists visited Mauritius in 2003 and the last national census in 2000 suggested that there were around 460 British nationals living in Mauritius, although we believe that there may be up to 1,500 currently (most of them dual nationals).
At ministerial level, we observed a good number of Mauritian ministers visiting the United Kingdom for official or private purposes.
